Q: Why is cod liver oil known around the world as the perfect nutritional supplement for every growing child?

A: Because cod liver oil contains Omega-3 oils that directly provide key nutrients to support the actual physical growth and development of a child’s brain.

The Benefits of Cod Liver Oil

Cod liver oil contains an abundance of natural, health-promoting vitamins and macronutrients and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) which are required for optimal brain function. A study in Pediatrics, January 2003, demonstrated that children born to mothers who had taken cod liver oil, rich in DHA, during pregnancy and while nursing, scored significantly higher (approximately 4.1 points by the age of four years) on standardized intelligence tests than those children whose mothers had received corn oil during the same period.

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid, a group of macronutrients that comprises up to 60% of our brain and supports healthy brain function and development. The importance of proper DHA supplementation for children cannot be overstated.

When cod liver oil is consumed, DHA is taken up by the brain and incorporated directly into phospholipid molecules in the cell membranes of brain cells. These DHA-rich phospholipids are responsible for the formation of synapses, the space between neurons where neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine are released to pass information from one neuron to the next. This supports the optimal development and functioning of the nervous system.

Natural Vitamin A

Cod liver oil is is a great source of Vitamin A, an essential vitamin. Vitamin A promotes the development of healthy vision, prevents infection by maintaining the integrity of the mucosa in the ears, nose and throat, and assists with the production and maintenance of healthy thyroid hormone levels.

Natural Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an important fat-soluble vitamin that can help regulate the immune system, and a key nutrient especially for the growth and development of bones.

How To Choose Pure and Safe Cod Liver Oil

High-quality cod liver oil should be clear to light yellow, not dark yellow or orange as the latter is an indication of oxidation resulting from poor manufacturing and bottling practices.

Only purchase cod liver oil if the label confirms the product has been tested for heavy metals such as mercury, as well as dioxins and PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls). In addition, the label should indicate the country where the fish used to make the product were harvested.

What about the taste of cod liver oil? Cod liver oil has a distinctly fishy taste and aroma which children may not like. If you choose a flavored cod liver oil, make sure the flavor is all natural and no artificial sweeteners have been added.

Avoid Any Cod Liver Oil With These Red Flags

  1. The label does not identify the source of the fish. This usually means the fish are from a substandard source or that the manufacturer simply does not know.
  2. The label states the fish are from coastal waters near Japan. The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster has ensured that most fish in and around Japan are contaminated with toxic radionuclides stemming from this disaster.
  3. The label states the fish are farmed, not wild caught. Farmed fish can contain higher levels of contaminants, drug residues, antibiotics and other chemicals which may pose a health risk to humans.
