HomeopathyEffective and safe medicine for babies without any side effects is not typically available at your local grocery store or pharmacy, but that does not mean that your choices in caring for your baby or your family stop there.

We’ve had great success in using homeopathic remedies for our babies for teething, cough, colic and air travel. What we both love about homeopathic medicine is that it is safe, effective and without any harmful side effects.

To get a little more clear on homeopathic medicine and the homeopathic approach for baby care, we bring to you our personal interview with Dr. Lauren Feder, M.D., a book author and a nationally recognized physician who specializes in homeopathic medicine.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that works by using a small dose of a substance to help stimulate the body’s healing forces. Homeopathy is an effective safe treatment that is gentle yet extremely effective when used properly. The principle of homeopathy is based on the “law of similars.” In other words, a substance that could cause symptoms in large amounts can heal you in minute homeopathic doses.

Let’s look at an example: The homeopathic remedy Allium Cepa (Red Onion) is used to treat the runny nose and watery eyes from a cold or hay fever, the very symptoms it would cause if one were cutting a red onion in the kitchen. There are hundreds of remedies that homeopathic practitioners use.

What can I expect from a visit to a homeopath and what makes a routine visit with a homeopathic doctor unique in comparison to a regular pediatrician?

As a classical homeopathic physician, I spend approximately 2 hours for the first visit with a child or adult. During this comprehensive interview, I am interested in gathering a great many details about your child’s current condition, medical complaints, past history, lifestyle, mental and emotional attitudes, past traumas, character and other relevant information.

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathy wrote, “A single symptom is no more the whole disease than the single foot is of a man.”

My goal is to choose a remedy that matches the person’s totality of symptoms, not just the main diagnosis. In other words, if 5 patients come to my office with a diagnosis of eczema they might all be treated with a different homeopathy remedy. Each person is treated as an individual. A properly chosen remedy stimulates the body to heal itself and strengthen the constitution so that one can live life to the best of his or her potential. One remedy is used at a time, as constitutional treatment can have a profound effect on a physical, mental and emotional level.

What is the licensure and certification of a Homeopath?

CCH (Certified classical homeopath) – Board certification, recognized amongst homeopaths.

How do parents find a qualified homeopath in their area?

Got the National Center for Homeopathy website.

What do you say to the sceptics who claim “Homeopathy has not be proven to be an effective treatment”?

If someone asked that as a question, I would mention the following about the history of homeopathy:

In 1789, a young physician in Europe named Samuel Hahnemann made a brilliant medical discovery. He called it Homeopathy. Although the principles date back to Hippocrates, it was Dr. Hahnemann who was credited with organizing it into a modern scientific and medical system. News of his exciting discoveries spread quickly. By the early 1800s, homeopathic practitioners had arrived on the shores of the New World. In America, homeopathy’s popularity continued to spread after American doctors had great success with it in the treatment of the cholera epidemic of 1849. In addition, many folks relied on homeopathic remedies to treat common mild ailments at home. By 1900, there were over 100 homeopathic hospitals in the United States alone.

Homeopathy’s many supporters include Britain’s Royal Family, Louisa May Alcott, Gandhi, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Goethe and many others.

What are common conditions that you treat?

A wide variety of physical, emotional, mental acute as well as chronic ailments can be treated using homeopathic remedies. Homeopathy, as a holistic form of natural medicine, is very versatile and can be used to treat many types of complaints.

The following list is some of the more common children’s conditions that I see in my office.

  • Colic
  • Thrush
  • Teething
  • Diaper Rash
  • Ear Infection
  • Colds/Flus
  • Fevers
  • Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Skin Rashes
  • Common Allergies

HomeopathyHow early can Homeopathy be used on infants?

It can be used safely and effectively on newborns.

It is ideal for children, the aged and in long-term treatment where there is very real concern about the toxicity and side effects of short and long-term drug use.

How fast and effective does Homeopathy work in children?

Depends on the illness, it can work immediately and sometimes takes longer.

Are there any known side effects?
No. It is virtually non-toxic, without any side-effects.

There is no risk of poisoning, regardless of quantity or even the wrong remedy. NO drug residue, addiction or buildup of tolerance, even with long term use.

Can childhood diseases like Measles or Mumps be treated or can symptoms be eased with Homeopathic Remedies?

Yes.

Can homeopathy help with behavior, difficulties with sleep, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, fears, shyness, excessive anger?

Yes, it can treat both mental and emotional conditions.

My friends baby has bad eczema, and nothing her pediatrician prescribed worked. Do/did you have any success treating eczema with Homeopathic medicine?

Yes, homeopaths treat eczema often with success.

Can Homeopatic remedies used as an Immune boost for my baby (before a trip or during cold season)?

Yes, they can.

How do I give the Homeopathic tablets to my child?

When possible, avoid touching the tablets with your fingers. Try not to have the remedy come in contact with metal, use a plastic or wooden spoon instead!

Older children are encouraged to let the tablets dissolve under the tongue. Younger children can let them dissolve in their mouths. If your child is too small to chew the medicine, place 3 pellets in 1/2 glass of water and let stand for 5 minutes. If you are using the hard pellets, they will not dissolve immediately, but the water will become medicated. Stir ten times, and give 1/4 teaspoonful (or dropperful)

Homeopathic medicines come as round, chewable pellets or as quick-dissolve tablets, depending on the brand you purchase. Both types are sweet and pleasant tasting, which makes it easy to administer to children.

Children take 3 tablets 3 times a day or as directed by your practitioner. In acute cases, take every hour until relieved, Doses are the same for all ages. If no improvement after 3 doses, discontinue the remedy.

Avoid eating or drinking 10 minutes (if possible) before and after taking your homeopathic remedy. With a baby or small child this is not always possible. Not to worry!

During the time period that you are taking a remedy, it is best to avoid coffee, chocolate, camphor, eucalyptus, mint and other strong smelling substances (mint toothpaste is okay).

If symptoms persist more than three days or worsen, discontinue the medicine and consult your doctor. As your condition improves, take your homeopathic medicine less often (1-2 times a day). When you are substantially better, discontinue the medicine.

How do I store Homeopathic remedies?

If you store your kit away from electrical appliances, strong smelling substances and extremes of temperature, the shelf life of the remedies is greatly extended. If possible, have your medicines be hand-checked at the airport, instead of going through the x-ray machine.
