  1. Know your vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals come in many different forms, each with differing levels of bioavailability. This means that our bodies cannot absorb and utilize all forms the same way.  For example, if you were planning to supplement your child’s diet with extra calcium, choose high quality sources such as calcium citrate over the more commonly used calcium carbonate which has a very low absorption rate.  The same is true of Zinc, which can be found as:  Zinc Citrate, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Acetate, Zinc Oxide, Zinc Gluconate.  A high quality Zinc Citrate would be a better choice.
  1. Vitamins and minerals work better together. Many vitamins and minerals do not absorb and function efficiently when consumed in isolation without the aid of other compounds.  For example:  Vitamin C enhances the absorption of Iron and Chromium.  For children, make sure any vitamin and mineral supplement you give to your children incorporates high quality sources of many of the 13 essential vitamins and 14 essential minerals they need for optimal health.
  1. Check the recommended daily values. A good brand for children will indicate the percent daily value for children aged 0 – 4 as well as for children aged 4 and up.   1. Never purchase supplements with artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are being added to more products every day even though many of them have little to no safety data regarding their long term use. Top offenders to avoid include Acesulfame Potassium, Sorbitol, Sucralose and perhaps the worst of them all, Aspartame, which accounts for over 75% of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA each year, many of which are serious and include seizures and even death.

  1. Do not purchase supplements with artificial colors or natural flavorings. Brightly colored tablets, chewables and gummies are being marketed to attract children. But, these typically contain dyes like Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 which have been linked with brain toxicity and hyperactivity. Many healthy, truly natural alternatives are available.
  1. Choose supplements with no gluten.  Check the label for the following ingredients with may be wheat-derived: wheat germ, food glaze, food starch, maltodextrin, MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, textured plant protein, artificial flavors and colors, natural flavors and dextrin. Gluten, a protein found in everything from breads and pastas to cookies and cereal (and yes, supplements) can cause bloating, diarrhea, constipation, stomach aches, headaches, mood swings, attention difficulties, and fatigue.
  1. Avoid supplements with benzoate. Typically listed as “sodium benzoate” or “potassium benzoate,” this preservative has been linked to a host of issues including hyperactivity, and may even form benzene, a known carcinogen, in the presence of Vitamin C. Stick with products that use potassium sorbate as a preservative, as it does not cause the issues typically found with benzoate.
