In the past 100 years, there have been dramatic changes in food, dietary choices and even the way children eat with packaged snacks and food on-the-go.

The change from whole foods grown in mineral-rich soils to industrial farming with GMOs, herbicides and insecticides is unprecedented. Then, the processing of that food with chemical additives, dyes and preservatives further degrades any nutritional value left and increases the toxic burden.

In sum, three dramatic changes have made it necessary to add nutritional supplements to a child’s diet.

Food Isn’t As Nutritious As It Used To Be

Did you know that it’s possible to buy an orange with ZERO Vitamin C?

In her book, Grass, Soil, Hope, author Courtney White relates her surprise when she heard Australian soil scientist Christine Jones speak about the alarming effects on food grown in our modern day nutrient-depleted soils: not only could you buy an orange with zero vitamin C, but according to an Australian government study, carrots had lost 99% of their vitamin A and apples had lost 80% of their vitamin C between 1948 and 1991.

A study by Dr. David Thomas reported a similar reduction in the nutrient content of food in the United Kingdom from 1940-1991.  He conducted a comprehensive analysis of 14 different categories of foods and beverage. Results show that copper had been reduced by 76 percent, calcium by 46 percent, iron by 27 percent, magnesium by 24 percent and potassium by 16 percent.

Even the mineral content of meat in the United Kingdom had been reduced , e.g., iron by 54 percent, copper by 24 percent, calcium by 41 percent and phosphorous by 28%.

Dr. Thomas concluded that “The deterioration in the mineral content of the 64 foods that could be traced over the 51-year period between 1940 and 1991, therefore, should be considered as alarming.”

Until the nutritional integrity of food is reestablished and the trend toward processed foods changes, nutritional deficits can be helped with supplements.

Children’s Diets Are Inadequate to Meet Nutritional Needs

Children have unique nutritional requirements. Not only do they need nutrients to power them through the day, but they also need nutrients to build their bodies. Pound for pound, children actually eat 2-3 times more than adults because they are “under construction”.

Today, it is virtually impossible to get children to eat enough of the right foods so that they will get all the nutrients they need. Supplements help fill the gaps.

An Exponential Increase in Exposure to Toxins

In a landmark study, the Environmental Working Group found that babies are born with chemicals in their bodies. In fact, they found 287 chemicals many of which are known carcinogens.

Once in the world, children are exposed daily to pollutants in the air, water and food, as well as chemicals from plastics, buildings, fragrances and more.

It is clear that children today need more nutrients than ever before to help them detox. Thus, while their nutrient intake has decreased, children’s nutrient requirements have increased.

How Supplements Provide a Solution

Supplements are the easiest way to ensure that children are getting all the nutrients they require to develop properly including physically, mentally and emotionally.*  Studies have confirmed the benefits of supplementation:

Even children with a relatively healthy diet are able to improve reading speed, learning capacity, and mathematical skills by daily supplementation with a good multivitamin and mineral.* (Wang,Y. Effect of micronutrient supplementation on health status of children. Wei Sheng Yan Jiu, 2003, Sep, 32(5), 455-8).

Daily supplementation was also shown to be beneficial in promoting growth and increasing immune strength in schoolchildren.*(Sarma, K., Effect of micronutrient supplementation on health status of schoolchildren. J. Nutrition, 2006, Jan., 22, 8-14).

Additionally, what’s not widely known is that supplements can help the body detox from pollutants and toxins.*

But which supplements and how often?
