You may be thinking, “Come on now. Can shoes really be that big of a health concern for our children?” But truth be told, the more we research this topic, the more we are floored to find out about the lack of regulations, standards, and the plethora of toxins that hide in our loved ones shoes!
Have you, or maybe your parents, ever rubbed Vics Vapor Rub on your feet when you were younger and ill? (Of which we don’t recommend because it is a petroleum based product). Or, maybe you have massaged essential oils on your baby’s feet, such as lavender, to help her transition into a restful sleep with more ease? Then you know that the soles of our feet are champions when it comes to absorbing stuff.
If you missed our first article titled Children Leather & Plastic Shoes: Pollutants, As Far As The Eye Can See! Part 1 please read it now before moving on to this one!
We planned to publish this post in September, as a follow up but we just couldn’t get any information out of shoe manufacturers…so we decided to publish this post anyway.
Toxins and Cancer-Causing Chemicals Found in Children Shoes

We’ve contacted the companies below several times and as to our disbelieve ONLY ONE COMPANY answered us with a reply that was not general or insufficient. Because of the lack of regulations, shoe manufacturers have nothing to worry about. Just step into a shoe store and take a deep breath….of toxic fumes! Below is a list of companies we have contacted for more clarity, what their shoes are made of, if they have been tested etc.
Shoe Company replies – insufficient and general answers:
They only sent us the bottom of a cut off sheet that says ‘Formamide passed’, no other info.
They wrote us; “In regards to your inquiry, the best answer to this is that our RASTA products are made with sustainable materials and our other products are made with materials that have the least impact possible. All of our products are currently manufactured in China.”
Providing safe and high quality products to our guests is a top priority for us. We rigorously test our owned-brand merchandise to ensure it complies with applicable product safety regulations and laws.
Sorry, it’s a long list and we’re not sure about the answers and don’t want to give you wrong information.
Companies who did not reply to our questions:
Soft Star Shoes
Safe Alternative Children Shoes
The only company that replied to us and answered our questions was Bear Feet Shoes.
BEAR FEET SHOES
“Our one piece baby shoe is made with all natural leather. The leather is chrome free and there is a natural glue that is only on the bottom of the un-dyed pigskin sock. We have it in gray, brown, orange, and cream, sizes 1-4, $18 ea, handmade in a single USA based factory. The leather is sourced from USA.
We certainly do not use any of those chemicals on any of our shoes made in the factory but I cannot vouch for the leather supplier other than the above listed colors.
